In the framework of the project: «Improving the European Rivers Water Quality through Smart Water Management Policies», BigData4Rivers, an Action Plan entitled: “Development of a pilot – research early warning system of flood in buffer zones” for the artificial retention lake, “Lake Euperidon”, of the City Park in the Municipality of Fylis, inspired by the good practice “Managing the risk of flooding on the Orleans Canal” (owned by the Conseil Département du Loiret and located in Centre France).
Lake Euperidon constitutes part of the flood protection infrastructure of a wide catchment area of the Regional Unit (RU) of Western Attica which also affects the RU of the Southern Sector of Athens. It receives the rainwater of the streams north of the urban planning area of Liosia; the flood supply of basic rain collectors including the Park’s rain runoff, i.e. all the waters of the catchment basin. Its water overflow reaches the sea through the “Euppiridon” conduit into Eschatia stream and then into Kifissos river.
The development and installation of the flood early warning system is based on the utilization of real-time information obtained from rain gauge stations and water level sensors appropriately placed. Hydrological simulation of the watershed and hydraulic simulation of existing rainwater collection infrastructure will be taken into account. Furthermore, all the parameters related to the correlation of rainfall with runoff, such as the geological characteristics of the watershed, the degree of soil saturation, the land uses and land cover, the land slopes of the basin will be integrated into a runoff prediction model of the water into the lake.
The project will, also, contribute to monitoring the vulnerability of the specific infrastructure, namely the artificial Retention Lake of Ano Liosion City Park, from flooding events, which are expected to intensify in the future due to climate change.
The flood early warning system is expected to be delivered by the end of the year.
It is included in the Attica Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan Act as its 4th sub-project and is financed by the “Attica 2014-2020” Regional Operational Program.
