The pilot application has been included in the Attica’s Regional Plan for the Adaptation to Climate Change, which is financed by the Operational Program “Attica 2014-2020”, and concerns flood risk management.
The objective of the research is to investigate the adaptation of the urban environment to the destructive consequences of floods due to extreme weather conditions in the future. As a result, there will be increased flood risk management at specific urban areas and the adverse effects of potential flood events will be mitigated.
Mild interventions will be designed enhancing the flood protection of the area and improve significantly its resilience in a period of climate deregulation, without overlooking the initial fortification of the area by the existing anti-flood infrastructure.
These mild, “intelligent” and spatially feasible interventions have the advantages of generally low implementation costs and the possibility of being exempted from environmental licensing. Interventions of this type can contribute to preventing destructive consequences, even temporarily reducing the momentum of the flood wave and contribute to the protection of sensitive infrastructure (schools, nursing homes, etc.) of the Municipality.
In this context, in October 2023, the research for the pilot application in the Municipality of Peristeri has been submitted to the Region of Attica.
Proposed interventions of the pilot application can be seen on the Data Management and Visualization Platform of the Attica’s Climate Change Observatory.
